Provided by Taste of Home

Time 55m

Yield 1 loaf.

Number Of Ingredients 12

4 to 4-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons dried marjoram
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon butter, divided
1 egg, beaten
Additional dried marjoram, thyme, and rosemary, optional

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast, salt, marjoram, thyme and rosemary. In a saucepan over low heat, heat milk, water and 1/4 cup butter to 120°-130°. Pour over the dry ingredients. Add egg and blend well. Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes. Punch dough down. Divide into three equal portions. Shape each into a 28-in. rope. Braid ropes; pinch ends to seal. Tie braid into a knot. Place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown; cover with foil during the last 15 minutes to prevent overbrowning. Melt remaining butter; brush over bread. Sprinkle with additional herbs if desired. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.

Categories     Bread     Bake

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 1/4 C Water
3 C Bread Flour
2 T Dry Milk Powder
2 T Sugar
2 T Butter
1 1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 T Chives
1/2 T Marjoram
1/2 T Thyme
1 tsp Basil
2 tsp Fast Rise Yeast

Steps:

  • Warm water in microwave to luke warm. Combine all ingredients in bread maker and set to dough setting. Remove dough after cycle and form into a braid. Let rise for about 30 minutes. Bake 350 approximately 25 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right herbs: Use a variety of herbs to create a flavorful and aromatic bread. Some popular choices include rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano. Consider using a combination of fresh and dried herbs for a more intense flavor.
  • Don't overdo it: When adding herbs to your bread, use a light hand. Too many herbs can overpower the other ingredients and make the bread bitter.
  • Use fresh herbs whenever possible: Fresh herbs will give your bread the best flavor. If you don't have fresh herbs on hand, you can use dried herbs. However, use about half the amount of dried herbs as you would fresh herbs.
  • Chop the herbs finely: Finely chopped herbs will distribute evenly throughout the bread and provide a more consistent flavor. You can chop the herbs by hand or use a food processor.
  • Stir the herbs into the dough: Once the dough has been kneaded, stir in the herbs. Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this can make it tough.
  • Let the bread rise: After the dough has been kneaded, let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size. This will allow the herbs to infuse the dough with their flavor.
  • Bake the bread: Bake the bread according to the recipe's instructions. Once the bread is baked, let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Conclusion:
