OLD-FASHIONED CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA MALTED

Old-Fashioned Chocolate or Vanilla Malted image

The Walgreen drugstore chain popularized this soda-fountain drink in the 1930s under the name "Horlick's Malted Milk". You can make this warm-weather favorite with either whole milk and ice cream or low-fat milk and frozen yogurt. For adults, toss a shot of Kahlua or brandy into the blender for a tasty treat.

MALTED VANILLA MILKSHAKE

Malted Vanilla Milkshake image

Classic, diner-style malted milkshakes are a retro treat easy to whip up at home. Malted milk powder can be easily found in the dried milk or ice cream section of most grocery stores and gives the milkshake a creamy richness and caramel-like flavor. If you've never used malted milk powder before this is the perfect recipe to try it out. A dollop of fresh whipped cream caps off the treat while a cherry on top finishes the iconic look.

FABULOUSLY FROTHY HOT CHOCOLATE

Fabulously Frothy Hot Chocolate image

Yummy hot chocolate made without using chocolate. It sounds to good to be true, but it isn't! Just wait till you try it and see for yourself. My five year old sister adores this and she loves to scoop up the yummy froth. You can even add a little bit of coffee (lesser quantity than Milo) to add a mocha hit.

Time 4m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

200 ml milk
3 teaspoons milo or 3 teaspoons ovaltine, powder
1 teaspoon sugar, as desired
1/3 teaspoon milo, Ovaltine (extra, for sprinkling on top) or 1/3 teaspoon cocoa powder (extra, for sprinkling on top)

Steps:

  • Pour about 200ml of milk into your microwave safe bowl. Put it in the microwave on high for 2 minutes.
  • Get your favourite mug out. Fill it with the 3 teaspoons Milo & the sugar.
  • Mix it together using a teaspoon.
  • When milk has become warm, whisk it (using the whisk of course!) immediately. You should notice a frothy layer of milk forming at the top.
  • Pour the hot milk (with exception of froth) directly into the mug from the bowl. All the milk that is not frothy should automatically pour into the cup.
  • By this stage, you should have the milk froth left in your bowl. Before you do anything else, mix the Milo and hot milk together in the cup.
  • Using a spoon, scoop out the froth from the bowl and layer it on top of your Milo Hot choccie. The amount of froth and how fluffy it turns out depends on how well you have whisked the hot milk.
  • Now, sprinkle a little bit of extra Milo or cocoa powder on top of the froth, and let it sit for about a minute.
  • Your hot chocolate is ready. Sip it. Spoon it. Lick it. Yum.
  • ENJOY!

Categories     Food & Cooking     Drink Recipes

Yield Makes two 1 1/2-cup servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/4 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup milk
7 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon malted-milk powder
3 cups ice cubes
Chocolate shavings, for garnish (optional)

Steps:

  • Whip 1/2 cup cream, and set aside.
  • Place the milk, remaining 3/4 cup cream, sugar, cocoa, and malted-milk powder in the jar of a blender, and blend until smooth and frothy.
  • With the motor running, add ice cubes, a few at a time, until the mixture is thick and smooth. Pour the mixture into tall glasses, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, if desired.

Tips:

  • Using high-quality vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste will greatly enhance the flavor of your malted.
  • If you don't have chocolate syrup, you can substitute 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder mixed with 1/4 cup of simple syrup.
  • You can also use a blender to make your malted. Just add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • If you want a thicker malted, add more ice cream.
  • For a richer malted, use half and half or whole milk instead of skim milk.
  • To make a vegan malted, use almond milk or soy milk instead of cow's milk, and use a vegan chocolate syrup.
  • Serve your malted immediately, topped with whipped cream, a cherry, and a straw.

Conclusion:

A frothy hot vanilla malted is a delicious and refreshing treat that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized to your liking. So next time you are looking for a sweet and satisfying drink, give this recipe a try.
