Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 large onions, sliced
2 Tbsp butter, melted
6 large cooking apples, unpeeled and sliced
1/2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • 1. Saute the onions in melted butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until tender.
  • 2. Place the apple slices on top of the onions. Combine the brown sugar and the remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over the apple slices. Cover and simmer for 12 to 14 minutes.
  • 3. Uncover and simmer an additional 5 minutes or until the apple slices are tender. Serve with a slotted spoon.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples that hold their shape well when cooked, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly.
  • Use a heavy skillet: This will help distribute the heat evenly and prevent the onions and apples from burning.
  • Cook the onions and apples over medium heat: This will allow them to caramelize slowly and develop a rich flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you do, the onions and apples will not cook evenly.
  • Stir the onions and apples frequently: This will help prevent them from burning.
  • Season the onions and apples to taste: Salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar are all good options.
  • Serve the onions and apples immediately: They are best enjoyed hot and fresh out of the skillet.
