FRIED CABBAGE WITH BACON, ONION, & GARLIC RECIPE - (4.6/5)

Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, & Garlic Recipe - (4.6/5) image

Provided by carlaschwartz

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 slices bacon, chopped
1 large onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large head cabbage, cored and sliced
1 tablespoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon paprika

Steps:

  • Place the bacon in a large stockpot and cook over medium-high heat until crispy, about 10 minutes. Add the onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion caramelizes; about 10 minutes. Immediately stir in the cabbage and continue to cook and stir another 10 minutes. Season with salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes more.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: Select a firm, dense cabbage with tightly packed leaves. Avoid cabbages that are too loose or have brown spots.
  • Slice the cabbage thinly: This will help it cook evenly and quickly. You can use a sharp knife or a mandoline to slice the cabbage.
  • Use a large skillet: This will give the cabbage plenty of room to cook without overcrowding. If you don't have a large skillet, you can cook the cabbage in batches.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you overcrowd the skillet, the cabbage will not cook evenly and will become soggy. Cook the cabbage in batches if necessary.
  • Cook the cabbage over medium-high heat: This will help it brown and caramelize. If you cook the cabbage over low heat, it will become mushy.
  • Stir the cabbage frequently: This will help it cook evenly and prevent it from burning.
  • Season the cabbage to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for a bit of tanginess.

Conclusion:

Fried cabbage with bacon, onion, and garlic is a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. It is a great way to use up leftover cabbage and is also a good source of vitamins and minerals. The next time you are looking for a simple and flavorful side dish, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
