Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 large ripe bananas
1.5 cups wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
oil for frying (enough to deep fry)

Steps:

  • Add the dry ingredients in a large bowl - flour, baking powder, baking soda and cardamom powder and mix them together very well using a spoon.
  • In another bowl, mash the bananas and add the sugar.
  • Mix the mashed bananas and sugar very well and add this mixture to the dry flour mixture.
  • Using your hands, mix the contents very well, it will be quite sticky.
  • Add the 1 tablespoon of oil to the mixture and mix the sticky batter again with your hands.
  • Cover the bowl and let it rest for a couple of hours.
  • After 2 hours the batter will be ready to be fried.
  • Heat enough oil in a thick bottomed pan to deep fry the banana balls.
  • Apply little oil in your palms which will help you to easily make the balls using the sticky batter.
  • Make mediums sized balls from the batter using your hands. The balls need not be perfectly round, you just need to make them roughly round.
  • Make one banana ball at a time and gently drop the banana ball to the hot oil.
  • Similarly make more balls using the batter and drop each one of them gently to the hot oil. You shouldn't overcrowd the pan, as it will make the flipping difficult. You can fry them all in multiple batches as needed.
  • Deep fry the banana balls until they are deep golden brown in color. Flip them (I used a regular steel spoon to flip them) as needed to fry all the sides until golden brown. It is important to notice that if you don't deep fry all the sides of the balls, it won't get cooked inside. If you over cook, the balls may turn hard. So just deep fry them enough to make all parts of the banana balls deep golden brown in color.
  • Once the banana balls are all deep fried, gently transfer one by one from the pan.
  • You can transfer the banana balls using a suitable slotted spoon or spatula which will help to drain the oil or you can remove the excess oil using a paper towel after transferring from the oil.
  • Similarly make fried banana balls until all the batter is finished. Enjoy the fried banana balls hot or warm with coffee or tea for snack!

Tips:

  • Use ripe bananas: Ripeness is the key to achieving a soft and sweet banana ball. Overripe bananas may be too mushy and difficult to work with, while underripe bananas may not have enough sweetness.
  • Mash the bananas smoothly: Proper mashing ensures a smooth and even texture for the banana balls. Avoid leaving any large chunks of bananas.
  • Chill the mashed bananas: Chilling the mashed bananas before coating and frying helps them hold their shape better during frying.
  • Use a light hand when coating the banana balls: Avoid overcoating the banana balls with the breadcrumb mixture. A thin and even coating ensures crispy and flavorful balls.
  • Maintain the oil temperature: Keeping the oil at a consistent temperature is crucial for even cooking. Use a thermometer to monitor the oil temperature.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan: Frying too many banana balls at once can lower the oil temperature, resulting in soggy balls.
  • Drain the banana balls properly: After frying, drain the banana balls on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Conclusion:

Fried banana balls are a delightful treat that combines the flavors of sweet bananas with a crispy coating. Following these tips ensures that your homemade banana balls turn out perfectly crispy, soft, and bursting with banana flavor. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if your first batch doesn't meet your expectations. Keep experimenting with different techniques and ingredients until you find the perfect combination that suits your taste. Happy frying!
