Categories     Fruit Sides

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

8 cooking apples ( i use red delicious, it makes a great crisp tasting applesauce ) peeled, cored and chopped
1/2 c sugar
1 Tbsp cinnamon
juice of 1/2 of a lemon
1 tsp vanilla extract
use whatever cooking apple is your favorite

Steps:

  • 1. Place apples in a 5 qt pot. Add sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and vanilla. Add just enough water to cover half of the apples. ( to prevent a watery sauce )
  • 2. Bring apples to boiling, reduce heat to simmer until apples are soft.
  • 3. Hand blend or mash apples to desired consistancy. Serve warm or cold.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For the best applesauce, select a variety of apples that are ripe, firm, and have a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Peel the apples if you want a smooth applesauce. If you prefer a more rustic texture, you can leave the peels on.
  • Core the apples before cooking them. This will help to remove the seeds and stems, which can make the applesauce bitter.
  • Add water or apple cider to the pot to prevent the apples from sticking. You can also add a little bit of sugar or honey to taste, if desired.
  • Cook the apples until they are soft and easily mashed. This will usually take about 15-20 minutes.
  • Use an immersion blender or a food processor to puree the apples until they reach the desired consistency. You can also mash the apples with a potato masher for a more rustic texture.
  • Serve the applesauce warm or cold. It can be enjoyed on its own, or used as a topping for pancakes, waffles, or yogurt.
