1/2 lb. Bob Evans roll sausage
1 Cup chopped onion
1 can pork and beans 28 oz.
2 cans Heinens 3 bean blend rinsed and drained
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 Tbl. prepared mustard
2 Tbl. molasses
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. chili powder

Steps:

  • In a large skillet cook bacon and drain on paper towel. In same skillet saute onion in 2 Tbl. of the bacon grease and set aside. Brown sausage. Transfer all to a greased 2 1/2 quart baking dish, add all of the beans and mix well. In a small bowl combine the sauce ingredients and stir into bean mixture. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes.

Tips:

  • Soak the beans overnight: This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more tender.
  • Use a variety of beans: This will give the baked beans a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include pinto beans, navy beans, and kidney beans.
  • Add some sweetness: Brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey are all good options for adding sweetness to the baked beans. You can also use molasses or sorghum for a more robust flavor.
  • Use a smoky flavor: Smoked paprika, liquid smoke, or even bacon grease can all add a smoky flavor to the baked beans. This will give them a more barbecue-like flavor.
  • Don't overcook the beans: Baked beans are best when they are slightly firm. If you overcook them, they will become mushy and lose their flavor.
