This is my favorite slaw recipe. I try to use ingredients that everyone has in there pantry. This is pretty spicy but not overpowering. You can really kick it up with more cayenne and hot sauce. This has a nice balance of spicy and sweet.

A creamy coleslaw with lots of flavor. The seasonings complement each other and the cabbage. Sometimes I add fresh minced onion if I am in the mood to chop it up. My family and friends love this coleslaw especially with BBQ sandwiches and Italian dishes.

SPICY SOUTHWESTERN SLAW

Spicy Southwestern Slaw image

Great topping for tacos--also a nice side dish for any type of Mexican or Tex-Mex entree! Hint: The measurements are approximate- I usually make this without any. You can use green or purple cabbage, or a combination of the two. Same goes for green or red bell peppers. For extra heat, use an additional jalapeno pepper.

FIREWORKS COOKIES

Fireworks Cookies image

Put on a show with a display of these patriotic cookies that are perfect for the 4th of July.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Dessert & Treats Recipes     Cookie Recipes

Time 3h

Yield Makes about 7 dozen 1 3/4-inch cookies, 5 dozen 2 1/4-inch cookies, 30 2 3/4-inch cookies, or 13 3 1/2-inch cookies

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
1 teaspoon baking powder
Coarse salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Red, White, and Blue Royal Icing

Steps:

  • Make the cookies: Sift flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt into a large bowl.
  • Beat butter and sugar with a mixer on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture, then vanilla. Refrigerate dough, wrapped in plastic wrap, for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Roll out dough to a scant 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut out cookies using a 1 3/4-, 2 1/4-, 2 3/4-, or 3 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, rerolling scraps once. Transfer to a baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.
  • Bake until edges just start to brown, 17 to 19 minutes. Transfer cookies to a wire rack, and let cool completely.
  • Decorate the cookies: Pipe an outline of white icing around edge of 1 cookie, leaving a 1/4-inch border, then "flood" with more white icing to cover.
  • Immediately pipe a red or blue dot in the center of cookie. Then pipe concentric rings of colors around the center dot (using the same color as the dot, or alternating colors).
  • Immediately drag a toothpick through the colors to create bursts, starting from the center dot and working toward the edge, then alternate dragging inward and outward as you work around the cookie. (Or drag around the cookie in 1 direction or curve the lines for a pinwheel effect.) Let dry. Repeat with remaining cookies and icings.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: For the best texture and flavor, use a combination of green and red cabbage. Green cabbage provides a crisp, peppery bite, while red cabbage adds sweetness and color.
  • Shred the cabbage thinly: This will help the slaw absorb the dressing better and make it easier to eat.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: In addition to cabbage, this slaw also includes carrots, bell peppers, and radishes. Feel free to add other vegetables that you like, such as broccoli, cauliflower, or jicama.
  • Make the dressing ahead of time: The dressing for this slaw can be made up to 24 hours in advance. This will give the flavors time to meld and develop.
  • Serve the slaw chilled: This slaw is best served chilled, so be sure to refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Conclusion:

This Fireworks Spicy Slaw is a delicious and refreshing side dish that is perfect for summer gatherings. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you are looking for a side dish that will wow your guests, give this slaw a try!
