FAMILY FAVORITE BAKED BEANS RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Family Favorite Baked Beans Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by msippigrl

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 (28-ounce) cans Bush's 'Country Style, Baked Beans with Bacon & Extra Brown Sugar, undrained
1 (15-ounce) can pork and beans, drained (I used Van Camp's)
1/2 small onion, chopped, scant 1/2 cup
1/2 small green bell pepper, chopped, about 1/3 cup
1 tablespoon cooking oil, or bacon fat
1/4 to 1/3 cup K.C. Masterpiece Original Barbecue Sauce
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup (I used Hunt's)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 or 2 drops liquid smoke, optional (I used Hickory)
1/3 cup crisply cooked and crumbled bacon (or packaged 'Real' bacon pieces)
Additional cooked bacon for garnish, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large non-stick saucepan set over medium heat, saute onion and bell pepper in about a tablespoon cooking oil or bacon fat just until onion is translucent. Add all remaining ingredients to the pot with the onion and bell pepper, stirring gently to combine. Heat until just warmed through (not boiling), stirring occasionally. (Watch carefully, the sugar might cause it to stick.) Pour warmed beans into an 11x7" casserole dish (or equivalent) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly, stirring once halfway through baking time. If desired, garnish top with additional cooked bacon pieces or whole strips during last 5 minutes of baking time. Remove from oven and let rest 5-10 minutes before serving. (The beans will thicken more as they cool.)

Tips:

  • Soak the beans overnight: This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more tender.
  • Use a variety of beans: This will give your baked beans a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, and navy beans.
  • Don't overcook the beans: Overcooked beans will be mushy and bland. Cook them until they are just tender, about 1 hour.
  • Use a flavorful cooking liquid: The cooking liquid will add flavor to the beans, so use something flavorful like chicken broth, beef broth, or vegetable broth. You can also add some spices, such as garlic, onion, and celery.
  • Add some sweetness: Baked beans are traditionally sweet, so add some sugar, brown sugar, or molasses to taste. You can also add some maple syrup or honey.
  • Add some smokiness: Smoked paprika or liquid smoke will add a delicious smoky flavor to your baked beans. You can also add some chopped bacon or ham.
  • Serve with your favorite sides: Baked beans are a great side dish for grilled meats, roasted chicken, or pork chops. You can also serve them with cornbread, mashed potatoes, or coleslaw.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a little creativity, you can create a baked bean dish that will be a hit at your next potluck or family gathering.
