THE BEST HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

The Best Homemade Applesauce image

After tasting the pure apple flavor of this homemade sauce, you just might never go back to the store-bought kind. Supermarket applesauce can be loaded with added sweeteners and flavorings. We use only a little sugar, plus lemon juice, salt and cinnamon, providing a balanced flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     condiment

Time 1h35m

Yield about 5 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

These light and tasty dessert bars are super moist and low in fat and sugar. Ideal for snacks or a light dessert. Adopted from Desserts for Diabetics cookbook.

Categories     Dessert

Time 45m

Yield 18 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 cup dry sugar substitute (I used Splenda)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon clove
1 1/2 cups hot unsweetened applesauce
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped (I used pecans)
1/4 cup raisins

Steps:

  • Place flour, sugar, dry sugar substitute, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a mixer bowl and mix at low speed to blend well.
  • Combine hot applesauce and baking soda. (Don't try to be modern and use cold applesauce and mix the baking soda with the flour; it doesn't work as well that way.).
  • Add the applesauce mixture, along with oil, nuts, and raisins, to flour mixture.
  • Mix at medium speed until flour is moistened and batter is creamy.
  • Spread batter evenly in a 9 x 13-inch cake pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray or greased well with margarine or butter.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 20 or 25 minutes, or until bars pull away from the sides of the pan and a cake tester comes out clean from the center. Cool on a wire rack.

Categories     Fruit

Time 35m

Yield 1 cake, 36 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup applesauce (no sugar added preferred)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup raisins
2 cups flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Cream together butter and sugar; add applesauce.
  • Mix in baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  • Dredge raisins in flour, then add both flour and raisins to batter.
  • Bake in a greased 15 x 10-inch jelly roll pan for 20-25 minutes at 350°.
  • Cool thoroughly in pan.
  • Frost with a powdered sugar glaze.
  • Cut into bars.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your applesauce bars a more complex flavor. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady.
  • Peel and core your apples before cooking them. This will make them easier to mash and will help to prevent the applesauce from becoming too thick.
  • Cook your apples until they are very soft. This will make them easier to mash and will help to release their natural sweetness.
  • Add sugar or other sweetener to taste. The amount of sugar you add will depend on the sweetness of your apples and your personal preference.
  • Add spices to your applesauce for extra flavor. Some good options include cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • Let your applesauce cool completely before using it in the bars. This will help to prevent the bars from becoming too runny.
  • Use a 9x13 inch baking dish for the bars. This will give you a nice, thick layer of applesauce.
  • Bake the bars at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the applesauce is bubbly.
  • Let the bars cool completely before cutting them into squares. This will help to prevent them from falling apart.

Conclusion:

Applesauce bars are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are a great way to use up leftover apples, and they can be customized to your own liking. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a delicious dessert that the whole family will enjoy.
