2 tablespoons butter, unsalted
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

3 cups potatoes (red skinned, sliced thin)
1 cup ham
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup gruyere cheese, grated

Steps:

  • Add sliced potatoes to well salted pot of water. Once it starts to boil, boil for three minutes. Do not overcook, drain well.
  • In a skillet on medium heat, combine the olive oil and onions. Add salt and pepper to taste and cook for 4 - 5 minutes.
  • Add the parsley, thyme, and ham and cook an additional 3 - 5 minutes then set aside in a bowl.
  • Wipe skillet out with paper towel and melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the flour and whisk to combine and the flour has turned a slight brown color.
  • Slowly add the milk and whisk constantly. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring to a boil and then turn heat down to low and whisk for another 2 - 3 minutes.
  • Add the ham and onion mixture to the skillet. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Cook an additional 2 minutes.
  • Butter a 2 quart casserole dish.
  • Add a spoonful of sauce and spread on the bottom of the casserole dish.
  • Place a layer of potatoes on top of the sauce.

  • Sprinkle the gruyere cheese on top and then cover with foil.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 35 - 55 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake another 10 minutes to brown the cheese.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes. Russet potatoes are the best choice for scalloped potatoes because they hold their shape well and have a creamy texture. If you use a different type of potato, such as Yukon Gold or red potatoes, they may break down during cooking.
  • Use fresh ingredients. The fresher the ingredients, the better your scalloped potatoes will taste. Use fresh herbs, such as thyme or rosemary, to add flavor to the dish.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly. The thinner the potatoes are sliced, the more evenly they will cook. Aim for slices that are about 1/8-inch thick.
  • Layer the potatoes and ham evenly. Make sure that the potatoes and ham are evenly distributed throughout the dish, so that each bite has a little bit of both.
  • Use a flavorful cheese. A sharp cheddar cheese is a classic choice for scalloped potatoes, but you can also use other types of cheese, such as Gruyère, Parmesan, or Gouda. Use a combination of different cheeses for a more complex flavor.
  • Bake the scalloped potatoes until they are golden brown. The scalloped potatoes are done baking when they are golden brown on top and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Conclusion:

Scalloped potatoes and ham is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a few simple tips, you can make scalloped potatoes and ham that is sure to impress your family and friends.
