Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

¼ cup red wine
½ cup orange juice
½ teaspoon grated orange zest
½ cup maple syrup
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
8 slices whole wheat bread
½ cup softened cream cheese
½ cup fresh blueberries
4 eggs
⅓ cup milk
¼ cup butter

Steps:

  • Bring the red wine, orange juice, and orange zest to a boil in a small saucepan; reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes. Pour in the maple syrup and crushed red pepper flakes. Continue cooking 5 minutes more; reduce heat to warm and keep the syrup hot.
  • Meanwhile, spread one side of each slice of bread with the softened cream cheese. Press the blueberries into the cream cheese and sandwich two pieces of bread together with the cream cheese on the inside to form the sandwiches; set aside. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl; whisk in the milk until smooth.
  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Dip the sandwiches into the egg mixture allowing the egg to soak into the bread; allow excess egg to drip off. Cook the sandwiches in the hot butter until golden brown on both sides and the bread is no longer soggy, about 5 minutes per side. Serve with the hot orange maple syrup.

Time 20m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/3 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
4 eggs
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup butter
12 slices French bread, cut 3/4 in thick (day old is best)

Steps:

  • Combine juice, peel, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla.
  • Beat well.
  • Melt butter in 13x9 baking pan.
  • Dip the bread on both sides; place in pan.
  • Bake at 450* for 6 minutes, turn and bake another 6 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use fresh oranges for the best flavor. If you don't have fresh oranges, you can use 1/2 cup of orange juice concentrate thawed and diluted with 1/2 cup of water.
  • Make sure the orange zest is finely grated. This will help release the oils and flavor of the zest.
  • Use a good quality bread for the French toast. A thick, hearty bread will hold up better to the cooking process.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the French toast. This will prevent it from cooking evenly.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat. This will help prevent it from burning.
  • Serve the French toast immediately with your favorite toppings. Some popular toppings include butter, syrup, powdered sugar, and fruit.

Conclusion:

Orange French toast is a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast or brunch dish. It's perfect for a special occasion or a lazy weekend morning.
