Tips:

  • Choose the right apples. Honeycrisp apples are the best choice for this recipe because they hold their shape well and have a sweet-tart flavor. If you can't find Honeycrisp apples, you can use another firm, tart apple, such as Granny Smith or Braeburn.
  • Don't overmix the topping. The topping should be crumbly, not doughy. If you overmix it, it will be tough.
  • Bake the crisp until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. This usually takes about 45 minutes.
  • Let the crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to develop and the crisp to set.
  • Serve the crisp warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
