Hamburger Gravy with Mashed Potatoes image

This is my hubby's all time favorite recipe! He never had it growing up; how can that be? I thought it was a "staple" that every 50's housewife had. I know my Mom (rest her soul) made this alot when I was growing up. Anyway, he and the kids just love this. Hope you like it too.

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/2 lb lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 tsp salt and pepper or to taste
1-2 tsp kitchen bouquet (to brown-up the gravy)
4 Tbsp flour - or more if gravy is still too thin
1 1/2 c skim or 1% milk or more to thicken
fresh mashed potatoes

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet w/ 2 tsp olive oil brown the hamburger and chopped onion. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir until ground meat is no longer pink and the onions are soft.
  • 2. Stir in the flour and add the milk, stirring constantly until gravy starts to thicken. Add Kitchen Bouquet for color (opt) and if not as thick as you would like stir 4-tbls flour into a cup of hot water and stir until flour absorbed. Then slowly add to your gravy as much as you need. Be careful of adding too much because then you will need to add more milk! Salt and pepper again if needed.
  • 3. Serve over your mashed potatoes. My family likes this served with green beans. Enjoy!

Time 30m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 pounds lean ground beef
½ onion, finely chopped
5 cups milk
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 teaspoon ground sage
salt and pepper to taste
½ cup all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Crumble the ground beef into a large deep skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until evenly browned. Drain most of the grease, leaving just enough to coat the pan. Add the onions, and cook for a few more minutes.
  • Pour 4 cups of the milk into the pan, and stir to scrape up any bits of food that could burn on the bottom of the pan. Mix in the bouillon, butter, sage, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Mix the flour into the last cup of milk until smooth. Slowly pour into the skillet, stirring constantly. Simmer for a few minutes to thicken. If the gravy is too thick, thin with a little bit of milk. If it is too thin, simmer longer, or add more flour. Taste and adjust seasonings before serving.

Time 25m

Yield 4 servings.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 pound ground beef
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1/2 cup milk
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1-1/2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
3 cups hot cooked mashed potatoes

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the soup, milk, mushrooms and bouillon. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 10-15 minutes or until heated through, stirring occassionally. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Nutrition Facts :

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Ground Beef: Opt for 80/20 ground beef, as it strikes a balance between lean and fat, resulting in flavorful and juicy gravy.
  • Brown the Beef Thoroughly: Take your time to brown the beef, stirring frequently to prevent clumping. This step enhances the flavor and helps create a rich, deep-brown gravy.
  • Deglaze the Pan: After removing the beef from the pan, pour in some water or beef broth to deglaze the pan. This helps dissolve the flavorful browned bits, adding depth and complexity to the gravy.
  • Use a Whisk: When adding the flour or cornstarch to the pan, use a whisk to stir constantly. This prevents lumps from forming and ensures a smooth, velvety gravy.
  • Simmer for Flavor: Allow the gravy to simmer for a few minutes after adding the milk or broth. This allows the flavors to meld and develop, resulting in a more flavorful and satisfying gravy.
  • Season to Taste: Don't be afraid to taste the gravy as you cook and adjust the seasonings accordingly. A well-balanced gravy should have a harmonious blend of salt, pepper, and herbs.

Conclusion:

Easy hamburger gravy is a versatile and delicious dish that can be served over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
