I have been making this for almost 40 years. The original recipe calls for all ketchup; it was my idea to make that half ketchup and half barbeque sauce. I do love spicy. I have never had a baked bean recipe that was this good and also this easy. Nobody will know you didn't spend all day on it.

Tips:

  • Choose dried beans that are plump and free of blemishes. If using canned beans, rinse and drain them thoroughly before using.
  • Soak the beans overnight in cold water before cooking. This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more digestible.
  • Use a Dutch oven or other heavy pot for baking the beans. This will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the beans from burning.
  • Add aromatics to the pot along with the beans, such as onion, garlic, celery, and carrots. These will help to flavor the beans.
  • Use a variety of seasonings to flavor the beans, such as salt, pepper, brown sugar, and molasses. You can also add a bit of smoked paprika or chipotle powder for a smoky flavor.
  • Bake the beans in a low oven for several hours, or until they are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve the beans hot, with cornbread or mashed potatoes.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a classic American dish that is perfect for a summer cookout or a cold winter night. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect pot of baked beans that everyone will love.
