Baking pasta with cheese on top creates a chewy and crispy topping kids will love. You can assemble the dish ahead and refrigerate it, then bake it right before dinner.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Pasta and Grains

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme, or oregano
1 can (28 ounces) whole tomatoes
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 pounds store-bought frozen ravioli
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and season with salt and pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add thyme and tomatoes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, breaking up tomatoes with spoon, until sauce is thickened and reduced to about 5 1/2 cups, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, cook ravioli in a large pot of boiling salted water just until they float to the top (pasta will continue to cook in oven). Drain pasta; return to pot.
  • Toss sauce with pasta. Pour pasta into a large gratin dish or 9-by-13-inch baking dish, and sprinkle with cheeses. Bake until golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Ravioli: Opt for high-quality ravioli with a delicate filling and a sturdy texture that can hold its shape during baking.
  • Prepare the Spinach: Thoroughly wash and chop the spinach to ensure it cooks evenly and incorporates well with the other ingredients.
  • Season Wisely: Don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your taste. Add a pinch of garlic powder, Italian seasoning, or red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
  • Use Fresh Herbs: Fresh herbs like basil, oregano, or parsley add a burst of flavor and color to the dish. Chop them finely and sprinkle them over the ravioli before baking.
  • Don't Overcook: Keep an eye on the ravioli while baking to prevent overcooking. The cheese should be melted and bubbly, but the ravioli should still retain a slight bite.

Easy Baked Cheese Ravioli with Spinach is a delightful and versatile dish that combines the comfort of ravioli with the convenience of a one-pan meal.
