APPLE - SWEET POTATO BAKE

Apple - Sweet Potato Bake image

My late Aunt Donna used to frequent farmer's markets during various local produce seasons, and she would find the best local recipes whenever she did. This one was on the table every Thanksgiving once she discovered it. My family normally prefers sweet potatoes unadulterated (wrapped in foil and simply baked), but we always empty the dish when this casserole is made. Prep and cook time do not reflect time for cooking sweet potatoes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, sweet apples that hold their shape when baked, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady.
  • Peel and core the apples: This helps to ensure that the apples cook evenly and prevents the skins from becoming tough.
  • Cut the apples into uniform slices: This will help them to cook evenly.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the sweet potatoes: This will help to prevent them from becoming mashed when you toss them with the apples.
  • Toss the apples and sweet potatoes with the spices: This helps to evenly distribute the flavor throughout the dish.
  • Don't overcrowd the baking dish: Make sure there is enough space between the apples and sweet potatoes so that they can cook evenly.
  • Bake the dish until the apples and sweet potatoes are tender: This usually takes about 45 minutes.
  • Serve the dish warm: This is when the apples and sweet potatoes are at their best.
