My family always loves it when I make this wonderful dessert. Old-fashioned strudel was too fattening and time-consuming, but this revised classic is just as good. It's best served warm from the oven. -Joanie Fuson, Indianapolis, Indiana

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples: This will give your strudel a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples.
  • Peel and core the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming too mushy.
  • Add some spices to the apples: This will enhance their flavor and make your strudel more aromatic. Some good options include cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • Use a good quality puff pastry: This will make your strudel light and flaky. If you can, use a puff pastry that is made with butter, not margarine.
  • Roll the strudel tightly: This will help keep the filling from spilling out. To get a tight roll, start by rolling the strudel from the long side.
  • Brush the strudel with egg wash before baking: This will help it to brown and give it a shiny crust.
  • Serve the strudel warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
