Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 1/2 lb green beans, cleaned and trimmed
3 Tbsp melted butter
2 Tbsp all purpose flour
1/4 tsp each salt and pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Cook your green beans until crisp, tender. I usually use my vegtable steamer for this as it makes them come out perfect.
  • 2. Drain beans, place in a large bowl. add the butter, then seasoned flour.
  • 3. Toss to coat.
  • 4. That's it! Serve hot

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, tender green beans: Look for beans that are bright green and snap easily when you bend them.
  • Trim the beans: Remove the ends of the beans and any strings that run along the sides.
  • Blanch the beans: This step helps to preserve the beans' color and crispness. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the beans, and cook for 2-3 minutes. Drain the beans and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Cook the onions and bacon: Heat some butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they are softened. Add the bacon and cook until it is crispy. Remove the onions and bacon from the skillet and set aside.
  • Make the sauce: In the same skillet, melt the butter and whisk in the flour. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture is smooth and bubbly. Gradually whisk in the milk and chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until it has thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  • Add the beans, onions, and bacon to the sauce: Stir to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the beans are heated through.
  • Serve immediately: Dutch-style green beans are best served hot, garnished with parsley or chives.
