DUTCH OVEN PEACH COBBLER FOR CAMPING

Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler for Camping image

A tasty peach cobbler cooked in an old-fashioned Dutch oven over hot charcoal.

Provided by AllanSimpson

Time 1h30m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup unsalted butter
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon salt
2 ¼ cups milk
3 cups white sugar, divided
6 cups sliced fresh peaches

Steps:

  • Light charcoal briquettes in a campfire or grill. Allow to burn until coals are mostly covered in ash, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Spread coals out to flatten and place a camping-safe Dutch oven on top. Add butter and let melt.
  • Meanwhile, sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together in a bowl. Mix in 1 1/2 cups sugar. Add milk and stir until batter is well combined.
  • Add remaining 1 1/2 cups sugar to peaches in a separate bowl; mix until evenly coated.
  • Swish Dutch oven around to coat all sides with melted butter. Pour liquid batter into the pot, then pour peach mixture into the center of the batter. Cover with the lid and place hot charcoal on top of the lid.
  • Cook until done, checking every 20 minutes to prevent overbaking, about 1 hour.

Tips:

  • Choosing the Right Peaches: Select ripe, firm peaches with vibrant color and a sweet aroma. Avoid peaches with bruises or blemishes.
  • Preparing the Peaches: For easier peeling, dip the peaches in boiling water for about 30 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath. The loosened skin will come right off.
  • Slicing the Peaches: Slice the peaches into uniform wedges to ensure even cooking. You can also use a peach pitter to remove the pits for a cleaner presentation.
  • Balancing the Sweetness: If your peaches are particularly sweet, consider reducing the amount of sugar in the filling to prevent the cobbler from becoming overly sweet.
  • Using Fresh or Frozen Pecans: If using fresh pecans, toast them in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant and lightly browned. For frozen pecans, thaw them thoroughly before adding them to the cobbler.
  • Assembling the Cobbler: Layer the sliced peaches and pecans evenly in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Pour the prepared batter over the fruit mixture and spread it out gently.
  • Baking the Cobbler: Bake the cobbler in a preheated oven until the crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Serving the Cobbler: Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving. It can be enjoyed on its own or topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries.

Conclusion:

Indulge in the sweet and comforting flavors of Dutch oven peach pecan cobbler, a delightful dessert that combines juicy peaches, crunchy pecans, and a tender, golden crust. With its simple ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, this cobbler is a perfect treat for any occasion.
