DUTCH APPLE SALAD

There's plenty of crunch in this refreshing salad that's perfect for autumn when apples are ripe for the picking. The simple milk and sugar dressing allows the fruit and veggie flavors to shine. You could use vanilla yogurt in place of the cooked dressing. -Shirley Joan Helfenbein, Lapeer, Michigan

DUTCH APPLE SALAD

Dutch Apple Salad image

This is one of the Zaar recipes that I adopted. Thanks a bunch to Julesong for her suggestions in helping me edit the recipe! Note: to make this salad low carb, substitute jicama for the apples and turnips for the potatoes.

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/3 cups ham, diced and cooked
2 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped
3/4 cup potato, diced and cooked
2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
3 small dill pickles, chopped (about 1/4 c)
1/3 cup buttermilk dressing or 1/3 cup feta cheese dressing
1 teaspoon minced onion
lettuce leaf, to garnish
paprika, to garnish

Steps:

  • Combine ingredients and serve on lettuce leaves.
  • Garnish with paprika.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your salad a more complex flavor and texture. Some good choices include Granny Smith apples, Honeycrisp apples, and Braeburn apples.
  • Don't peel the apples. The skin of the apples adds flavor and nutrients to the salad.
  • Slice the apples thinly. This will help them to absorb the dressing better.
  • Use a light dressing. A heavy dressing will weigh down the salad and make it less refreshing.
  • Add some crunch. Nuts, seeds, or granola can add a nice crunch to the salad.
  • Serve the salad chilled. This will help to keep it refreshing.

Conclusion:

Dutch Apple Salad is a delicious and refreshing salad that is perfect for summer gatherings. It is easy to make and can be customized to your liking. So next time you are looking for a light and healthy salad, give Dutch Apple Salad a try!
