SPICY DRUNKEN SHRIMP

Spicy Drunken Shrimp image

This is a warm peel-and-eat shrimp recipe that I tried to duplicate from a little bar-and-grill in Deland, Florida. The shrimp are boiled in a spicy beer and thyme broth and served hot in a beer mug. Serve with dipping sauces of lemon-butter and hot sauce. I dip first in lemon-butter and then hot sauce, but you will find what works best for you! You will need plenty of paper towels!

DRUNKEN SHAMELESS SPICY SHRIMP (DINOSAUR BBQ)

Drunken Shameless Spicy Shrimp (Dinosaur BBQ) image

John Stage almost always leaves something out in the recipes he publishes so they are just a little off. In this case, I think he just wrote "creole seasoning" when in fact, this stuff tastes most authentic with a spice they sell around here in the restaurant and in stores called "Cajun Foreplay." Use it generously. Either way these are delicious, especially served with Dinosaur BBQ Cocktail Sauce (recipe # 295318). Not for wimps!

DRUNKEN SHRIMP

Time 35m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb raw shrimp, peeled
2 tablespoons dry sherry
2 1/3 tablespoons cornstarch, divided
1 teaspoon sugar, divided
3 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup green onion, chopped
1 teaspoon gingerroot, minced
1 garlic clove, minced

Steps:

  • Combine sherry, 2 ts cornstarch and 1/2 ts sugar in a medium bowl; stir in shrimp until well coated. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile combine soy sauce, water, vinegar and remaining cornstarch and sugar; set aside.
  • Heat oil in wok over high heat; add green onions, ginger and garlic and stir fry for 30 seconds.
  • Add shrimp and stir fry for 3 minutes or until pink.
  • Pour in soy sauce mixture; cook and stir until sauce thickens.
  • Garnish as desired.

Tips:

  • Use fresh shrimp. Fresh shrimp will have a more flavorful and tender texture than frozen shrimp.
  • Clean the shrimp properly. Remove the heads, tails, and shells from the shrimp. You can also remove the veins from the shrimp if you want a more refined dish.
  • Marinate the shrimp. Marinating the shrimp in a mixture of olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and herbs will help to infuse them with flavor.
  • Cook the shrimp over high heat. This will help to create a nice char on the outside of the shrimp while keeping the inside tender.
  • Don't overcook the shrimp. Overcooked shrimp will be tough and chewy. Cook the shrimp for just a few minutes, until they are pink and opaque.
  • Serve the shrimp immediately. Drunken shrimp is best served immediately after it is cooked. You can serve it with a variety of dipping sauces, such as cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, or remoulade.

Conclusion:

Drunken shrimp is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a party or a weeknight meal. With its bold flavors and tender texture, drunken shrimp is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it. So next time you're looking for a new shrimp recipe, give drunken shrimp a try. You won't be disappointed!
