The use of different liquors in recipes is a sure fire way to develop a complexity of flavor attained no other way. As the alcohol cooks off, leaving the essence of the ripple, the apples absorb the flavors of the bourbon combining to make this perfect ice cream topping.

Famous Dave's Drunken Apples Recipe - (4.7/5) image

Provided by รก-1012

Number Of Ingredients 5

24 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into semicircles
3 -4 cups white sugar
4 tablespoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup rum

Steps:

  • 1Mix apples with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. 2Mix in rum. 3Heat over medium heat until apple mixture is juicy and the juice boils. 4Boil for 20 minutes over medium heat. 5Enjoy! :).

Tips:

  • Choose firm, tart apples: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn varieties work well.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven: This will help to evenly distribute the heat and prevent the apples from burning.
  • Don't overcrowd the pot: The apples should be in a single layer so that they can cook evenly.
  • Simmer the apples gently: Don't let the mixture boil, as this will make the apples tough.
  • Add the alcohol of your choice: Brandy, rum, or bourbon all work well in this recipe. You can also use apple cider or apple juice for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Let the apples cool completely: This will allow the flavors to meld and the apples to firm up.
  • Serve the apples warm or cold: They can be enjoyed on their own, as a topping for ice cream or yogurt, or used in pies, tarts, and other desserts.

Conclusion:

Drunken apples are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. They are perfect for a special occasion or a weeknight dessert. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a truly unforgettable dish that will impress your family and friends.
