Tips:

  • Soak the peas overnight: Soaking the peas overnight or for at least 4 hours will help them cook more evenly and quickly. You can also use the quick-soak method by boiling the peas for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour before draining and rinsing.
  • Use a large pot: Split peas expand as they cook, so it's important to use a large pot to prevent them from boiling over.
  • Season the peas as desired: Split peas have a mild flavor, so they can be seasoned with a variety of herbs and spices. Some popular options include salt, pepper, garlic, onion, cumin, and curry powder.
  • Add vegetables or meat to the soup: Split pea soup is a great way to use up leftover vegetables or meat. Common additions include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, ham, and bacon.
  • Serve the soup with a side of bread or crackers: Split pea soup is a hearty and filling meal, but it can also be served with a side of bread or crackers for a more complete meal.

Split pea soup is a delicious, healthy, and affordable meal that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is also a great way to use up leftover vegetables or meat. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a pot of split pea soup that will warm you up from the inside out.
