1 cup pitted dried plums (prunes), coarsely chopped
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons plus 3/4 cup sugar, divided
2 tablespoons shortening
1 large egg, room temperature
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons coarse sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a small saucepan, combine dried plums, water and 2 tablespoons sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat for 1 minute. Remove from heat; let stand until plumped, about 10 minutes. Drain plums, reserving fruit and liquid. Measure liquid, adding enough water to yield 1/2 cup. , Cream shortening and remaining sugar until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Beat in egg. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. 2 sheets thawed phyllo dough
4 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
4 tablespoons sugar
2 ounces cream cheese, cut into cubes
6 dried plums, halved
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
12 pieces candied orange peel
Powdered sugar, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
  • On a work surface carefully brush a sheet of phyllo with melted butter and sprinkle it with 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar. Cut 6 strips from top to bottom 3 inches wide.

½ cup canola oil

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup pitted prunes, chopped
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup buttermilk
1 cup white sugar
¼ cup butter
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease and flour a 11x9-inch pan.
  • Blend sugar and canola oil together in a mixing bowl using an electric mixer. Add eggs, flour, prunes, allspice, baking soda, and salt; mix well. Add buttermilk, pecans, and vanilla extract and combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan.

3 egg whites (save the yolks for the custard)
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons sugar
1 (8 ounce) jar prune baby food
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup milk
3 egg yolks
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Beat together 3 egg whites with salt.
  • Add the 6 Tbsp.
  • sugar and beat until stiff.
  • Fold in the prunes and lemon juice.
  • Place in a casserole dish and place the dish in a pan of water.
  • Bake at 350F for 30 minutes.
  • Custard: Scald the milk in a double boiler.
  • Beat together egg yolks, sugar and vanilla.
  • Add this egg mixture slowly to the milk.
