Steps:
- 1. In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder and soda, and salt until well mixed. Cut in the butter, using a pastry blender (or pulling 2 knives through ingredients in opposite directions) until mixture is crumbly. Add buttermilk, egg and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer on medium speed for 1 minute. Spread in an 8-inch square pan that has been greased on the bottom only.
- 2. In a small bowl, mix all the streusel ingredients, except the chocolate chips, with a fork until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle over batter and then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Recipe calls for just 1/4 cup chips, but I think 1/2 cup would be better. Use your own judgement, depending on how much chocolate you like.
- 3. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 35 to 45 minutes, or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool for 30 minutes and serve warm.
CHOCOLATE STREUSEL POUNDCAKE
In this stunning dessert, a moist and soft chocolate poundcake is topped on two sides - bottom and top - with crunchy, slightly salty streusel flecked with chocolate chips. The combination of cocoa powder and melted dark chocolate gives this cake a particularly rich flavor. You can make it up to 3 days ahead. Store it at room temperature, well wrapped in foil. Then serve it topped with ice cream or whipped cream and fresh berries, or toasted and buttered, or plain as it is. It also freezes well for up to 3 months. Steps:
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan, then line with parchment paper, leaving enough to hang over the edges of the pan. Grease the parchment on the bottom of the loaf pan.
- In a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, or in the microwave, melt the chocolate for the cake, stirring until smooth. Set aside to cool while you prepare the streusel.
- Prepare the streusel: In a bowl, stir together flour, sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Using fingers or a fork, cut in the butter until it is evenly distributed and forms large, moist crumbs. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Scatter half the streusel evenly into the bottom of the loaf pan. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until baked through.
- Prepare the cake: In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat melted butter, both sugars and salt together until combined. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, yogurt, milk and melted chocolate. Fold in dry ingredients until just combined.
- Scrape batter into prepared pan and top with remaining streusel. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of cake emerges clean, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack and cool completely before turning out and slicing.

Steps:
- For streusel:
- Whisk brown sugar and cinnamon in medium bowl to blend. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until mixture holds together in small, moist clumps. Mix in pecans and chocolate chips. (Can be made up to 3 days ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
- For cake:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour 13x9x2-inch metal baking pan. Sift flour, baking soda, and baking powder into medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat sugar and butter in large bowl until blended and smooth. Beat in eggs 1 at a time, then orange peel and vanilla extract. Mix in flour mixture in 4 additions alternately with sour cream in 3 additions. Mix in orange juice. Spread half of batter in prepared pan. Sprinkle with half of streusel. Drop remaining batter over by heaping tablespoonfuls; carefully spread batter to make even layer. Sprinkle with remaining streusel.
- Bake cake 30 minutes. Lay sheet of foil loosely over pan to keep topping from browning too quickly. Continue baking until tester inserted into center of cake comes out clean, about 35 minutes longer. Remove foil. Cool cake in pan on rack 20 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar; serve warm or at room temperature. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Cool completely. Store airtight at room temperature.)
Tips:
- To achieve the perfect streusel topping, use a combination of brown and granulated sugar for a delightful balance of sweetness and texture.
- For a richer and creamier coffee cake batter, use full-fat sour cream and buttermilk. These ingredients add moisture and tang, enhancing the overall flavor of the cake.
- Feel free to experiment with different chocolate chips or chopped nuts in the streusel topping to create variations that suit your taste preferences.
- Allow the coffee cake to cool completely before serving to ensure clean slices and a firm texture.
- Store the coffee cake at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Alternatively, freeze the cake for up to 2 months for longer storage.
