DILLY ONION RINGS

Be sure to let these marinate for at least the 5 hours. I really enjoy these served with fried catfish or smoked/barbecue pork! My mom likes to throw them on top of her turnip greens (cooked forever). This is just one of those recipes that have been around forever. Marinating time is not included in prep or cook time.

  • For a crispier braid, refrigerate the dough before baking.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • To make the dill-onion filling, you can use fresh or dried dill. If using fresh dill, chop it finely before adding it to the mixture.
  • Be sure to knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes. This will help the braid rise properly.
  • When braiding the dough, be sure to tuck the ends under so that they don't come undone during baking.
