Rich chocolate cake, caramel, toffee, and whipped topping - need I say more?!

Time 1h30m

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix
½ (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
6 ounces caramel ice cream topping
3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered toffee, chopped
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

Steps:

  • Bake cake according to package directions for a 9x13 inch pan; cool on wire rack for 5 minutes. Make slits across the top of the cake, making sure not to go through to the bottom.
  • In a saucepan over low heat, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, stirring until smooth and blended. Slowly pour the warm topping mixture over the top of the warm cake, letting it sink into the slits; then sprinkle the crushed chocolate toffee bars liberally across the entire cake while still warm. (Hint: I crush my candy bars into small chunks as opposed to crumbs - I like to have pieces I can chew on!)
  • Let cake cool completely, then top with whipped topping. Decorate the top of the cake with some more chocolate toffee bar chunks and swirls of caramel topping. Refrigerate and serve right from the pan!

Tips:

  • Use a quality cocoa powder for a rich chocolate flavor. A dark, Dutch-processed cocoa powder will provide the best results.
  • Make sure the oven is preheated before you start baking. This helps to ensure that the cake bakes evenly.
  • Don't overbeat the egg whites. Overbeaten egg whites can make the cake tough.
  • Fold the egg whites into the batter gently. Overmixing can deflate the egg whites and make the cake dense.
  • Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Overbaking can make the cake dry.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it. This helps to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • Serve the cake at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.

Conclusion:

This devil's food caramel torte is a decadent and delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion. The rich chocolate cake is topped with a creamy caramel frosting and a sprinkling of chocolate shavings. This cake is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
