8 slices white bread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 slices pepper jack cheese
2 cups Winning Deviled Ham, recipe follows
1 pound smoked ham, cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup prepared mustard
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
3 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons hot sauce (recommended: Tabasco)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon mustard powder
Salt
Pepper

Steps:

  • Butter each slice of bread on 1 side. Put 4 slices of bread, butter side down, into a large skillet. Top with a slice of cheese and 1/2 cup deviled ham. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 pickled okra plus 1 teaspoon brine (see Cook's Note)
1 shallot, peeled and quartered
8 slices white bread
8 slices pumpernickel bread
