FRENCH TOAST

You can use white sandwich bread, but French toast also works well with other loaves, including brioche, challah, cinnamon-raisin, whole-wheat, French, even sourdough.

Provided by Jessica Furniss

Time 20m

Yield 6 slices

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 large eggs
⅔ cup whole milk (or high-fat milk alternative)
1 teaspoon sugar
Dash of salt
½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Dash of cinnamon (optional)
6 slices white bread (or bread of choice)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
Toppings, such as fruit, syrup, butter, or powdered sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, and salt (as well as the optional vanilla extract and cinnamon, if using) in a medium shallow bowl until the mixture is fluffy and light in color.
  • Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working with one bread slice at a time, soak the bread in the egg mixture for 3 to 4 seconds per side. Don't let the slices sit too long; they will turn soggy and fall apart.
  • Once butter is melted and bubbling, add 3 soaked bread slices to hot pan and cook until golden brown, or about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. (There may be some spots that do not brown; that's normal.)
  • Flip each slice, and cook until gold brown, or about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining butter and egg-soaked bread. Serve hot with toppings of choice.

Yield Makes 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 large eggs
2 tablespoons water
4 3/4-inch-thick slices sourdough bread (each about 4x3 inches)
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 large red, green or yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 cup matchstick-size strips Black Forest ham (about 4 ounces)
4 large thin slices Swiss cheese, folded to match bread size

Steps:

  • Whisk eggs and 2 tablespoons water in pie dish to blend. Season with salt and pepper. Add bread; let stand 1 minute. Turn bread over; let stand until egg mixture is absorbed, about 8 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, melt 1 tablespoon butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes. Add ham; sauté until vegetables and ham are golden, about 3 minutes longer. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer mixture to bowl; cover with foil to keep warm.
  • Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in same skillet over medium heat. Add bread and cook until brown and crusty on bottom, about 5 minutes. Using spatula, turn bread over. Transfer toast to plates. Top with vegetable mixture and serve.

DECADENT FRENCH TOAST

This is the best french toast I have ever eaten. You make it at night before going to bed, the next morning; pop it in the oven.

Provided by Chef dl5crew

Categories     Breakfast

Time 45m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup dark brown sugar
French bread
5 tablespoons butter
5 eggs
2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
1/2 cup milk
chopped pecans
cinnamon

Steps:

  • Spray a 13x9 baking dish liberally with cooking spray.
  • Mix brown sugar, butter, & corn syrup (add a touch of cinnamon) in a saucepan and cook until bubbly. Pour into baking dish. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.
  • Slice French bread, layer in pan.
  • Mix well in a bowl; eggs, milk and cinnamon. Pour over bread. Make sure to get some of the milk mixture on each slice.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Bake at 325 degrees for 30 45 minutes. Invert on to serving platter or another baking dish. Enjoy!
  • ***I add cinnamon to taste. I use between a teaspoon & a tablespoon for the whole recipe. I dont measure, just shake. I also cut French bread slices in half and put cut side down. You can also serve this with whipped cream & strawberries. I prefer warm syrup. I like to invert onto something I can put into the oven to help everything to set-up better & keep it warm so I can get everything else done.

Tips:

  • Use stale bread for French toast. Stale bread will absorb more of the egg mixture and will result in a more tender and flavorful French toast.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking French toast. If you overcrowd the pan, the French toast will not cook evenly and will be soggy.
  • Cook French toast over medium heat. Medium heat will allow the French toast to cook through without burning.
  • Flip the French toast only once. Flipping the French toast too often will break it up and make it difficult to cook evenly.
  • Serve French toast immediately with your favorite toppings. French toast is best served hot and fresh out of the pan.

Conclusion:

Denver French toast is a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast or brunch dish. It is a great way to use up stale bread and it can be customized with a variety of toppings. Denver French toast is a hearty and satisfying meal that is sure to please everyone at the table.
