DELICIOUS BAKED ZITI RECIPE

Delicious Baked Ziti Recipe image

Now here's a classic midweek meal, or a hot dish to bring to a potluck. Delicious Baked Ziti Recipe is a lot like American lasagna, but easier to make.

Provided by Jane Kaylie

Categories     Casseroles

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb ziti (can sub penne) pasta
olive oil
1 lb bulk italian sausage or ground beef or pork
3-4 clove garlic, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh rosemary (or basil), minced
1 Tbsp italian seasoning
1 tsp red pepper flakes
1 large jar of marinara sauce (about 32 ounces) or make your own tomato sauce
1/2 lb of mozzarella cheese, grated
1 c heaping of ricotta cheese
1 c grated parmesan or pecorino cheese

Steps:

  • 1. Bring a large pot of water to a strong boil. Add about a tablespoon of salt for every 2 quarts of water. Add the pasta and boil, uncovered, until the pasta is al dente-edible but still a little firm.
  • 2. Drain the pasta through a colander. Toss with a little olive oil so the pasta does not stick together while you make the sauce. Pour a tablespoon or so of olive oil into a large sauté pan on medium-high to heat.
  • 3. When the oil is hot, add the bulk sausage or ground meat. Do not crowd the pan (work in batches if needed). Break up any large chunks of sausage as it cooks. Brown well. Don't stir that often or it will be more difficult for the meat to brown. If you are using ground beef or pork instead of sausage, add a little salt.
  • 4. When the meat is mostly browned, add the onions and stir well to combine. Sauté everything until the onions are translucent and beginning to brown, about 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic, rosemary or basil, Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes and stir to combine.
  • 5. Cook 1 minute, then add the tomato sauce and stir well. Bring to a simmer. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread a thin layer of sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch casserole pan, then dot the surface with half the ricotta cheese.
  • 6. Ladle in some sauce with the pasta, mix it well and add the pasta into the casserole. Pour the rest of the sauce over the pasta, dot the remaining ricotta cheese over the pasta, and sprinkle on top both the mozzarella and the Parmesan cheese.
  • 7. Bake in the oven until the top is nicely browned, about 20 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use High-Quality Ingredients: Opt for fresh, flavorful ingredients to elevate the taste of your baked ziti. High-quality pasta, cheese, and sauce make a world of difference.
  • Cook the Pasta Properly: Al dente pasta is key to a successful baked ziti. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions, but keep it slightly undercooked as it will continue to cook in the oven.
  • Make a Robust Sauce: Use a flavorful tomato sauce as the base for your baked ziti. You can use a store-bought sauce, but it's better to make your own from scratch. Add herbs, spices, and a touch of red wine for depth of flavor.
  • Layer Wisely: Layer the ingredients in your baking dish in a specific order. Start with a layer of sauce, then pasta, then cheese, and repeat. This ensures that each bite is packed with flavor.
  • Bake at High Temperature: Bake the ziti at a high temperature (400°F or above) for a shorter time. This helps to create a crispy, golden-brown top while preventing the pasta from drying out.
  • Let It Rest: Allow the baked ziti to rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the dish to set. It also makes it easier to slice and serve.

Conclusion:

Baked ziti is a classic Italian casserole that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With its combination of pasta, sauce, cheese, and seasonings, it's a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you're serving it as a main course or a side dish, baked ziti is sure to be a hit. Experiment with different sauces, cheeses, and toppings to create your own unique version of this classic dish.
