ALWAYS JUICY BAKED HAM

Always Juicy Baked Ham image

A never-fail recipe that is a family favorite. Frequent basting during the cooking time is key to a delicious result. We can't help taking several tester bites while waiting for dinner to be ready. Makes great leftovers for sandwiches. A Maritime tradition with home-baked beans and bakery fresh bread. Also fantastic with potato scallop and buttered green beans.

Time 3h55m

Yield 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

One 8- to 10-pound bone-in fully cooked ham
1/4 cup whole cloves
1 cup honey
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Place the ham in a roasting pan, fat side up. Score the ham in diamond shapes with a sharp knife. Insert the cloves in the center of each diamond. Bake until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees F when inserted in the thickest portion (avoiding bone), 18 to 20 minutes per pound.
  • Meanwhile, make the glaze. Combine the honey, brown sugar, orange juice and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes.
  • Remove the ham from the oven. Increase the oven temperature to 375 degrees F.
  • Remove about 2 tablespoons pan drippings from the roasting pan and add to the glaze. Whisk to combine. Pour the glaze over the ham. Return the ham to the oven and continue baking, basting with the pan juices frequently, until the ham is browned, about 20 more minutes. Slice the ham and serve with the pan juices, if desired.

Time 50m

Yield 3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 ham steaks
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
2 pineapple rings

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Place ham steaks in a large square or rectangular casserole dish.
  • Poke holes in the ham to allow juices to flow through.
  • Sprinkle brown sugar on each ham steak and then flip to coat both sides.
  • Pour orange juice over ham.
  • Top with a pineapple ring.
  • Bake for 45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham: Select a fully cooked ham for baking. Fresh hams require additional cooking time and can be difficult to gauge doneness. Look for a ham that is labeled "bone-in" or "spiral-cut" for even cooking.
  • Preheat your oven: Before you start cooking the ham, preheat your oven to the temperature specified in the recipe. This will help ensure that the ham cooks evenly.
  • Cover the ham: To prevent the ham from drying out, cover it with foil or a baking bag during the majority of the cooking time. This will help keep the ham moist and juicy.
  • Use a meat thermometer: To ensure that the ham is cooked to a safe internal temperature, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the ham. The ham is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) for a fully cooked ham, or 160°F (71°C) for a fresh ham.
  • Let the ham rest: Once the ham is cooked, let it rest for 15-20 minutes before carving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the ham, resulting in a more tender and flavorful meat.
  • Serve and enjoy: Slice the ham and serve it with your favorite sides. Baked ham is a versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a main course, sandwich filling, or appetizer.

Conclusion:

Baking a ham is a relatively easy and straightforward process that can be mastered with a little practice. By following the tips and instructions provided in this article, you can create a delicious and juicy baked ham that will be the star of any meal. Whether you are hosting a special occasion dinner or simply looking for a tasty and convenient weeknight meal, baked ham is a great option that is sure to please everyone at the table.
