CREAMY POTATO AND LEEK GRATIN

Creamy Potato and Leek Gratin image

Cutting leeks into large pieces (they almost dissolve when thinly sliced) gives them a presence equal to disks of potato, while cooking the vegetables separately-the leeks are braised in butter, the spuds are simmered in milk and cream-preserves their distinct flavors. The glorious results will supply the homiest meatloaf supper with pizzazz.

POTATO LEEK GRATIN

Potato Leek Gratin image

Layer thinly sliced potatoes in a gratin dish, and then take your time sautéing the leeks, letting them turn a little golden and crisp around the edges, which brings out their sweetness. Add the leeks to the potatoes, and using the same pan in which you cooked the leeks, scrape up the brown bits at the bottom of the pan with a mix of cream, garlic, thyme and nutmeg, pouring that over the potatoes and leeks.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality potatoes: Choose firm, waxy potatoes like Yukon Gold or Red Bliss for the best texture.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Make sure there is enough space between the potatoes so they can cook evenly and develop a nice golden-brown crust.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pan: This will help distribute the heat evenly and prevent the potatoes from burning.
  • Don't stir the potatoes too often: Stirring them too much will break them up and make them mushy. Just give them a gentle shake every now and then to make sure they're cooking evenly.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth you use will add a lot of flavor to the potatoes, so choose one that you like the taste of. You can use chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even white wine.
  • Add some aromatics: Aromatics like onions, garlic, and herbs will add even more flavor to the potatoes. Sauté them in a little butter before adding the potatoes to the pan.
  • Bake until the potatoes are tender and golden brown: The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the potato slices and the type of potato you're using. Just keep an eye on them and remove them from the oven when they're tender when pierced with a fork and have a nice golden-brown crust.

Conclusion:

Decadent Scalloped Potatoes with Leeks and Cream is a delicious and comforting dish that's perfect for any occasion.
