Time 15h30m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup dried navy beans
4 cups water
¼ cup ketchup
¼ cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
⅛ teaspoon chili powder
1 small onion, chopped

Steps:

  • Place the navy beans into a large container and cover with several inches of cool water; let stand 8 hours to overnight. Or, bring the beans and water to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Once boiling, turn off the heat, cover, and let stand 1 hour. Drain and rinse before using.
  • Place the beans in a large saucepan with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 1 hour.
  • Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Stir the ketchup, maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and chili powder together in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Once the beans have simmered for 1 hour, drain, and reserve the cooking liquid. Pour the beans into a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish and stir in the chopped onion and the molasses sauce. Stir in enough of the reserved cooking liquid so the sauce covers the beans by 1/4 inch.
  • Cover, and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C), and cook 6 hours longer. Stir the beans after they have cooked for 3 hours. Once the beans are tender and the sauce has reduced and is sticky, remove from the oven, stir, recover, and allow to stand 15 minutes before serving.

FAMILY REUNION BAKED BEANS

Family Reunion Baked Beans image

This is my Mother-in-Laws recipe. It has been handed down and has fed the family many time at the reunions and picnics.

Provided by Stephanie Newkirk

Categories     Other Side Dishes

Time 2h45m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 48 0z. jar(s) randalls great northern beans
1 med. onion, diced
1 lb lean bacon, cooked, drained and cut into pieces
1 1/2 c white sugar
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and line a 1/2 deep baking sheet with foil. Lay the bacon on this and bake about 12 minutes or until cooked. Remove and drain on paper toweling and snip into pieces with kitchen sheers.
  • 2. While the bacon is cooking, empty the beans with their juice into a 9x13 baking dish.
  • 3. Chop the onion. Add to beans along with the sugar and garlic powder, folding gently into the beans.
  • 4. Adjust the oven heat down to 325 degrees. Add the bacon, gently folding into the beans.
  • 5. Bake, uncovered in a 325 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours. The bean juicy will thicken. These beans are on the sweet side....you may adjust the amount of sugar down but we love them this way with potato salad and chicken or pork!

Tips:

  • Soak the beans overnight: This helps to soften the beans and reduce the cooking time.
  • Use a variety of beans: This gives the dish a more complex flavor and texture.
  • Add plenty of seasonings: Brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce are all classic additions that add sweetness, richness, and depth of flavor.
  • Cook the beans low and slow: This allows the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Serve the beans hot: They're best enjoyed fresh out of the oven.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a classic comfort food that are perfect for any occasion. They're easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like them sweet, savory, or somewhere in between, there's a baked bean recipe out there for you. So next time you're looking for a hearty and delicious dish to serve, give baked beans a try.
