DATE SHAKES

Date Shakes image

Don't skim on the quality of the ice cream. Lower quality ice creams have too much air and your shakes will be thin, not thick and creamy. I remember coming to California when I was young (years and years ago!) and we stopped in Indio for one of these famous concoctions. Delicious! source unknown

Categories     Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
1 cup whole milk
2 cups good quality vanilla ice cream

Steps:

  • 1. Mix dates and milk in blender and puree til smooth. Add ice cream and puree again. Divide between two cups or glasses. Serve at once.
  • 2. Roadside stands all around date growing county in California sell creamy sweet date shakes in big to go cups with thick straws. The rest of us have to be satisfied with making our own. It's not difficult to make, though, and these shakes with their mellow caramel flavor are easy to whip up. The combination of pureed dates and vanilla ice cream gives the shakes an incomparable smooth, rich texture and a lovely pale coffee with cream color. For the most intense flavor, use Medjool dates, a high end date that originated in Morocco but is relatively easy to find in the U.S. Medjools are recognizable by their large size and their soft golden brown to molasses brown skin. For a less intense shake, go with the more delicate Deglet Noor dates. These smaller, caramel colored dates account for about 75 percent of California's date crop and are often what we find in grocery stores. If you don't have drinking straws handy, it might be a good idea to buy a box. A shake always tastes best drawn up through a fat straw.

Tips:

  • Use ripe dates: Overripe or mushy dates will give your shake a gritty texture. Look for dates that are plump and have a deep brown color.
  • Soak your dates before blending: Soaking dates in warm water for 10 minutes will soften them and make them easier to blend. This will also help to bring out their natural sweetness.
  • Use a high-powered blender: A regular blender may not be powerful enough to blend dates smoothly. If you don't have a high-powered blender, you can soak your dates for longer (up to 30 minutes) or add a little bit of milk or water to help the blending process.
  • Add other ingredients to taste: You can add other ingredients to your date shake to customize it to your liking. Some popular additions include bananas, peanut butter, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
  • Serve your date shake immediately: Date shakes are best enjoyed fresh. If you need to store your shake, you can keep it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Just be sure to shake it well before serving.

Conclusion:

Date shakes are a delicious and nutritious way to enjoy this healthy fruit. They're easy to make and can be customized to your liking. So next time you're looking for a refreshing and satisfying snack or drink, give date shakes a try!
