Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups green beans trimmed
1/2 cup cubed ham (optional)
Olive oil for sautéing
2 cloves garlic chopped fine
1 medium onion chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, place the green beans in two quarts of boiling water, with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, uncovered, until fully cooked -- about six minutes. Remove from heat and drain. Sauté the onion in olive oil until the onions begin to get limp. Add crushed garlic and ham and cook for two additional minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in fresh lime juice. Pour sauce over cooked green beans and toss to coat evenly. Sprinkle chopped fresh cilantro on top and serve.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, tender green beans: Look for beans that are a vibrant green color and have no blemishes or bruises.
  • Trim the beans: Remove the ends of the beans and any tough strings from the sides.
  • Cook the beans until they are tender-crisp: You don't want to overcook the beans, or they will become mushy. A good rule of thumb is to cook them for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are bright green and tender.
  • Season the beans well: Cuban green beans are typically seasoned with a combination of garlic, onion, cumin, and salt and pepper. You can also add other spices, such as oregano, chili powder, or paprika, to taste.
  • Serve the beans immediately: Cuban green beans are best served hot, right out of the pan. You can garnish them with chopped fresh parsley or cilantro for a pop of color and flavor.

Conclusion:

Cuban green beans are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that can be enjoyed on any occasion. They are a great way to add a healthy dose of vegetables to your meal, and they are also a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy side dish, give Cuban green beans a try. You won't be disappointed!
