Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced green bell pepper
1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
1 pound ground beef, 80/20
½ teaspoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons kosher salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ cup uncooked long grain white rice
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes with juice
1 cup water
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional and not shown in our photo

Steps:

  • In a skillet that has a tight fitting cover, heat olive oil over medium high.
  • Add onion, peppers, garlic, ground beef, dry mustard, chili powder, salt and pepper. Sauté until ground beef is no longer pink, breaking up beef as you cook.
  • Add rice and cook for two minutes letting rice absorb liquid.
  • Add tomato paste and cook for one minute.
  • Add canned tomatoes with juice, water and Worcestershire sauce. Stir, cover and simmer for 20 minutes covered.
  • After 20 minutes, remove lid and fluff the mixture then serve. If the mixture is too wet, cook for another few minutes with lid off.
  • If you are using the cheese, sprinkle on top for last few minutes of cooking time with lid on.

CROCK POT TEXAS HASH

Crock Pot Texas Hash image

A very delicious, yet simple comfort food that everyone enjoys. Many, many ago, we were invited for dinner. As the hostess served this from the crock pot, I kicked my "meat and potatoes" DH under the table, knowing he was wondering "What is that???" He licked his plate clean, commented how good it was, and went back for seconds...and thirds. The 4 of us ate the entire 6 servings! On cold winter evenings, DH still requests this often. POTLUCK SUGGESTION: When "hash" is done and still very hot, spread in 9x13-inch casserole dish, top with spring onions and cheese; cover with foil or lid. Cheese will be melted by the time you arrive. You'll return with an empty dish!

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Chuck roast or beef stew meat are both good choices for this recipe, as they are tough cuts that will become tender when cooked slowly in the crock pot.
  • Brown the beef before cooking: Browning the beef in a skillet over medium-high heat before adding it to the crock pot will help to develop its flavor and give the stew a richer color.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: This recipe calls for potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions, but you can add any other vegetables that you like. Some good options include green beans, corn, peas, and mushrooms.
  • Season the stew well: Be sure to season the stew with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. You can also add other spices, such as chili powder, cumin, or paprika, to give the stew more flavor.
  • Cook the stew on low for 8-10 hours: This will allow the beef and vegetables to become tender and the flavors to meld together.

Conclusion:

This Crock Pot Texas Hash is a hearty and flavorful stew that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Serve it with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
