CLASSIC COLESLAW WITH CREAMY DRESSING

Classic Coleslaw with Creamy Dressing image

This tangle of cabbage and carrot is dressed with a balance of tangy mustard, mayonnaise, and creamy sour cream to create the standard slaw.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Salad Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon coarse salt
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1 small green cabbage, (about 1 3/4 pounds), finely shredded
2 medium carrots, cut into 1/8-inch-thick matchsticks or coarsely grated
1 small onion, coarsely grated (optional)

Steps:

  • Whisk together mustard, vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, salt, mayonnaise, and sour cream in a small bowl. Refrigerate dressing, covered, until ready to use, or up to 2 days.
  • Put cabbage, carrots, and onion (if desired) in a large bowl. Pour in dressing, and toss thoroughly. Refrigerate, covered, until slaw begins to soften, 1 to 2 hours. If not using immediately, refrigerate, covered, up to 2 days. Just before serving, toss coleslaw again.

Tips:

  • For the best flavor, use fresh, crisp cabbage. Napa cabbage or Savoy cabbage can be used instead of green cabbage.
  • Shred the cabbage finely using a sharp knife or a food processor fitted with a shredding blade. This will help the dressing to coat the cabbage evenly.
  • Use a combination of mayonnaise and sour cream for a creamy and tangy dressing. You can also use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a healthier option.
  • Add some sweetness to the dressing with sugar or honey. You can also use a sugar substitute if you prefer.
  • Add some acidity to the dressing with vinegar or lemon juice. This will help to balance out the sweetness of the dressing.
  • Season the dressing with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add other spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or celery seed.
  • Chill the coleslaw for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve the coleslaw as a side dish with grilled meats, fried chicken, or fish. You can also use it as a topping for tacos or sandwiches.

Conclusion:

Creamy coleslaw is a delicious and versatile side dish that can be enjoyed all year round. With its creamy and tangy dressing, it is sure to please everyone at your table. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy side dish, give this creamy coleslaw recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
