CREAMED PEAS WITH MUSHROOMS AND ONIONS.

Creamed Peas With Mushrooms and Onions. image

Yummy side dish. I love peas! Use low fat milk for a lighter sauce or half and half for a richer sauce. I usually use what I have on hand. Sometimes I add a small handful of swiss cheese and a small handful of grated parmesean cheese to make it even yummier! I also find canned mushrooms work well in this if you are not against all things canned :) This is from southern cooking.

1 pinch black pepper

Steps:

  • Cook peas according to package directions. Set aside.
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Saute onion and garlic in butter until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the peas and mushrooms, then season with sugar, salt, thyme and pepper. Reduce heat to low, and cook just until heated through.

Tips:

  • Use fresh peas. Fresh peas have a sweeter, more delicate flavor than frozen or canned peas. If you can't find fresh peas, frozen peas are a good substitute.
  • Choose the right mushrooms. Cremini mushrooms or white button mushrooms are both good choices for this dish. Avoid using shiitake or oyster mushrooms, as they have a stronger flavor that can overpower the peas.
  • Don't overcook the peas. Peas should be cooked until they are tender but still have a slight crunch. Overcooked peas will become mushy and lose their flavor.
  • Use a good quality cream. Heavy cream or whipping cream will give the sauce a rich, creamy texture. Avoid using milk or half-and-half, as they will make the sauce too thin.
  • Season the sauce to taste. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg or cayenne pepper for a bit of spice.

Conclusion:

Creamed peas with mushrooms and onions is a simple but delicious dish that can be served as a side dish or main course. It's a great way to use up fresh peas and mushrooms, and it's also a good source of protein and fiber. The creamy sauce is rich and flavorful, and the peas and mushrooms add a pop of color and flavor. This dish is sure to please everyone at your table.
