Add 1 cup sugar, 1 strip orange or lemon zest and 2 tablespoons water to the pan and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the cranberries are soft, about 10 minutes. Increase the heat to medium and cook until the cranberries burst, about 12 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the reserved cranberries. Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 cup (200 g) sugar
1 cup (250 ml) water
4 cups (12 oz package) fresh or frozen cranberries
Optional: Pecans, orange zest, raisins, currants, blueberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice.

Steps:

  • Rinse cranberries: Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them. Pick out and discard any damaged or bruised cranberries.
  • Stir in mix-ins, if using: Once the cranberries have burst you can leave the cranberry sauce as is, or dress it up with other ingredients. We like to mix in a half a cup of chopped pecans a pinch or two of orange zest. Some people like adding raisins or currants, or even blueberries for added sweetness. You can also add holiday spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. If adding spices, start with a pinch of each and add more to your taste.

Tips:

  • Use fresh cranberries for the best flavor and texture. If using frozen cranberries, thaw them before using.
  • Rinse the cranberries thoroughly before using to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the oranges and lemons. This will help prevent the peel from becoming bitter.
  • Add the sugar, water, and spices to a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  • Stir in the cranberries and cook for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cranberries have softened and burst.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool slightly before serving. Serve warm or cold.

Conclusion:

Cranberry sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes. It is a classic Thanksgiving side dish, but it can also be served with chicken, turkey, pork, or fish. Cranberry sauce is also a great addition to sandwiches, salads, and yogurt parfaits. So next time you are looking for a simple and delicious way to add flavor to your meal, give cranberry sauce a try.
