CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH RASPBERRY VINEGAR

CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH RASPBERRY VINEGAR image

Categories     Fruit     Thanksgiving     Cranberry Sauce

Yield 2 1/3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup raspberry vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 12-ounce package cranberries
1 cinnamon stick
1 tablespoon thin orange peel strips (orange part only)

Steps:

  • Combine first 3 ingredients in heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Mix in cranberries, cinnamon stick and orange peel. Reduce heat, cover partially and simmer until berries burst, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Cool completely (sauce will thicken as it cools). Discard cinnamon stick.

Tips:

  • Utilize Fresh or Frozen Berries: Fresh berries yield the best flavor, but frozen berries work well too. If using frozen berries, thaw them before cooking.
  • Choose Ripe Berries: Select ripe, plump berries for the most intense flavor.
  • Use a Variety of Berries: Don't limit yourself to just cranberries and raspberries; try a mix of different berries such as blueberries, blackberries, or strawberries.
  • Control Sugar Level: Adjust the sugar content to your preference. You can reduce the amount of sugar for a less sweet sauce.
  • Simmer Gently: Simmer the sauce over low heat to prevent burning and allow flavors to meld together.
  • Add Spices: Incorporate spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Add Citrus: A squeeze of lemon or orange juice can brighten up the sauce and balance the sweetness.
  • Use Good-Quality Vanilla Extract: Opt for pure vanilla extract for the best flavor.
  • Cool Before Serving: Allow the sauce to cool slightly before serving to let the flavors develop further.
