CRANBERRY GIN AND TONIC

This is much easier to prepare than similar cocktails of the same name that require boiling cranberries, oranges and sugar for 20 minutes, and then waiting for the syrup to cool. Instead, this version utilizes readily-made items that are normally kept stocked in a home bar, and it doesn't require cooking or cooling time. We had these at our family's Christmas party this year, and I thought they were so festive and quite refreshing and tasty! This recipe comes from the idrink website.

CRANBERRY GIN AND TONICS

Yield Makes 10 drinks

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 (12-ounce) bags fresh cranberries
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3 1/3 cups chilled tonic water
1 1/4 cups gin
3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

Steps:

  • Bring cranberries, sugar, and water to a simmer in a 3- to 3 1/2-quart saucepan, then simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until berries just begin to pop, about 2 minutes. Drain cranberries in a fine-mesh sieve set over a 1-quart glass measuring cup, then reserve 2 cups cranberries and force remaining berries through sieve into syrup. Discard solids remaining in sieve, then add reserved cranberries to syrup. Cool to room temperature. Transfer to a pitcher and chill until cold, about 2 hours.
  • Add remaining ingredients to syrup, stirring gently to combine. Serve drinks over ice in 8- to 10-ounce glasses.

Tips:

  • Use fresh cranberries: Fresh cranberries have a brighter flavor than frozen or canned cranberries. If you can't find fresh cranberries, you can use frozen cranberries, but thaw them before using.
  • Make your own simple syrup: Simple syrup is easy to make and it's a great way to sweeten your cocktail without adding any extra calories. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then remove from heat and let cool.
  • Use a good quality gin: The gin you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your cocktail. Look for a gin that is smooth and has a good balance of flavors. Some good options include Bombay Sapphire, Hendrick's, and Tanqueray.
  • Garnish your cocktail with fresh cranberries and rosemary: This will add a festive touch to your cocktail and make it even more delicious.

Conclusion:

Cranberry gin and tonics are a refreshing and festive cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. They're easy to make and they're always a hit with guests. So next time you're looking for a delicious and easy-to-make cocktail, give cranberry gin and tonics a try.
