CRANBERRY APPLESAUCE

Cranberry Applesauce image

Fresh cranberries bring a pleasing tartness and beautiful ruby color to basic applesauce.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Healthy Recipes     Gluten-Free Recipes

Time 45m

Yield Makes 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices (try a combination of Gala, Golden Delicious, and McIntosh)
1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine apples, cranberries, cinnamon stick, sugar, and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender, 30 to 35 minutes. (If sauce begins to stick to the bottom of the pan, add 2 to 4 tablespoons more water.)
  • Remove from heat; discard cinnamon stick. Stir in lemon juice.

Tips:

  • Choose firm, tart apples for applesauce. This will help the applesauce maintain its shape and flavor.
  • Peel and core the apples before cooking. This will make the applesauce smoother and easier to eat.
  • Add sugar or honey to taste. The amount of sugar you add will depend on the tartness of the apples and your personal preference.
  • Add spices to taste. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are all popular spices to add to applesauce.
  • Cook the applesauce over low heat until the apples are soft. This will help the applesauce develop its full flavor.
  • Serve the applesauce warm or cold. Applesauce can be enjoyed on its own, or it can be used as a topping for pancakes, waffles, or yogurt.

Conclusion:

Cranberry-cinnamon applesauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals, and it is also a great way to use up leftover cranberries. If you are looking for a healthy and flavorful recipe, cranberry-cinnamon applesauce is a great option.
