Tips:

  • Selecting the right pork shoulder: Opt for a pork shoulder with good marbling as it results in more tender and flavorful pulled pork.
  • Rubbing the pork: Ensure the pork shoulder is evenly coated with the rub mixture, penetrating the meat for maximum flavor.
  • Slow and steady cooking: Maintain a consistent low temperature throughout the cooking process to allow the pork to break down and become fall-apart tender.
  • Using a Dutch oven or slow cooker: These cooking methods provide a moist environment, preventing the pork from drying out and ensuring a juicy and succulent texture.
  • Adding liquid: Incorporating liquids like apple cider vinegar, chicken broth, or beer imparts additional moisture and depth of flavor to the pulled pork.
  • Adding sweetness: Honey, brown sugar, or molasses add a touch of sweetness to balance the savory and tangy flavors.
  • Using a homemade barbecue sauce: Preparing a homemade barbecue sauce allows for customization of flavors and heat levels, resulting in a unique and personalized pulled pork dish.
  • Resting the meat: After cooking, let the pulled pork rest for a period to allow the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful experience.
