This tangy smoothie is a perfect way to use up leftover cranberries from your holiday celebrations. It gets a touch of sweetness from maple syrup, and wheat germ gives it a nutty note as well as a dose of iron, zinc and B and E vitamins.

Time 5m

Yield 1 serving

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup frozen cranberries, plus one thinly sliced cranberry for garnish
3/4 cup ice cubes
1/3 cup lowfat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup orange juice
1 to 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon toasted wheat germ

Steps:

  • Put the frozen cranberries, ice cubes, yogurt, orange juice and maple syrup into a blender. Blend on high until smooth, turning off the blender and pushing down on the ingredients with a spatula or wooden spoon as needed to help the blending process. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of cold water if needed to adjust consistency. Pour into a glass and sprinkle with the wheat germ. Garnish with the sliced cranberry. Stir well before serving.

CRAN' RAZZY SMOOTHIE

This is a wonderful drink for any time! The slight tartness from the Cranberry Juice do not take over, but it balances nicely with the Raspberries. Run out of Cranberry Juice? No problem! If you have leftover jelled cranberries, add a spoon or two to water to make your own.

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 c cranberry juice
1/2 c milk (so milk is good for this, vanilla flavored)
1/2 c frozen raspberries
1/2 c vanilla or plain yogurt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
4 ice cubes
1 splenda packet
1 Tbsp flax or wheat germ (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Place all ingredients into blender and pulse a few times to break up the ice, then blend to desired consistency (about 30 seconds) and enjoy.
  • 2. Note: This is a thinner drink and smaller than I normally make them. I tend to make mine thicker as I sip on them through the morning and want them to remain cold. For a more "breakfast" smoothie, you can add prepared quick oatmeal that has cooled (about 1/4th cup). This will also thicken the smoothie so you may need to add additional liquid.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe cranberries. Look for cranberries that are plump and deep red in color. Avoid cranberries that are soft or have bruises.
  • Wash the cranberries thoroughly. Rinse the cranberries under cold water before using them.
  • Use fresh or frozen raspberries. If using fresh raspberries, wash them thoroughly before using them. If using frozen raspberries, thaw them before using them.
  • Use a high-powered blender. A high-powered blender will help to create a smooth and creamy smoothie.
  • Add ice cubes or frozen fruit to make the smoothie thicker. If you want a thicker smoothie, add some ice cubes or frozen fruit to the blender.
  • Sweeten the smoothie to taste. Add honey, maple syrup, or another sweetener to taste.
  • Serve the smoothie immediately. Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh.

Conclusion:

Cran-raspberry smoothies are a delicious and refreshing way to start your day. They are packed with antioxidants and nutrients, and they are a great way to get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. The next time you are looking for a healthy and tasty breakfast or snack, try a cran-raspberry smoothie.
