CRAB BOATS

This is absolutely wonderful. I changed the recipe to smaller slices of French bread and spread the crab filling on the top. Heat and serve as appetizer or with a soup for lunch.

Categories     Crab

Time 20m

Yield 25 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cans crabmeat, minced
8 ounces American cheese, shredded
1 onion, chopped fine
mayonnaise, to bind
1 loaf French bread (or two small loaves)

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients with enough mayonnaise to make it moist.
  • Scoop out the center of the French bread loaf and fill with the crab filling.
  • Bake in 350F oven until the cheese melts.

Tips:

Choose the Right Crab: Opt for crabs that are heavy for their size, as this indicates a meatier crab. Look for crabs with bright orange or greenish-yellow shells, as these are signs of freshness. Avoid crabs with cracked or chipped shells. Cook Crabs Live: Cooking crabs live ensures the best flavor and texture. Place the crabs in a large pot of boiling water and cook for 8-10 minutes per pound. Be sure to cover the pot tightly to prevent the crabs from escaping. Chill Crabs Quickly: After cooking, immediately transfer the crabs to an ice bath to stop the cooking process and preserve their delicate flavor. This will also make them easier to handle. Use the Right Tools: Invest in a good quality crab cracker and fork to make the process of cracking and eating crabs easier. You may also want to wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges. Serve with Simple Accompaniments: Keep the focus on the crab by serving it with simple accompaniments like melted butter, lemon wedges, and drawn butter. Avoid overpowering sauces or dips that might mask the natural flavor of the crab.
