  • Soak the beans overnight: Soaking the beans overnight helps to reduce the cooking time and makes them more digestible. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 2 minutes, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of beans: Using a variety of beans, such as pinto beans, black beans, and kidney beans, adds flavor and texture to the dish.
  • Add flavorings early on: Adding flavorings, such as garlic, onion, and cumin, early on in the cooking process allows them to infuse the beans with flavor.
  • Cook the beans until they are tender: The beans should be cooked until they are tender but still hold their shape. Overcooked beans will become mushy.
  • Serve the beans with your favorite toppings: Cowpoke beans can be served with a variety of toppings, such as cheese, sour cream, and salsa. You can also add cooked rice or quinoa to make a complete meal.
