CONEY ISLAND HOT DOGS

Coney Island Hot Dogs image

The story of how the Coney Island hog dog got to the Midwest is pretty straightforward, but no one really knows exactly how the wiener first came to be topped with what is basically a hot meat relish. I have no idea how authentic this is, and have never been to Detroit, or even Flint. I have had Nathan's® version, which I enjoyed, but the word on the street is that it's not nearly as good as the relatives it spawned.

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
2 cups water, or more to taste
½ cup diced onion
⅓ cup ketchup
2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons chili powder, or more to taste
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cumin, or to taste
½ teaspoon celery salt, or to taste
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
8 all-beef hot dogs
8 hot dog buns

  • Combine ground beef, water, 1/2 cup diced onion, ketchup, butter, garlic, chili powder, salt, black pepper, cumin, celery salt, and cayenne pepper together in a pot. Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the hot dog will be. Look for fresh, high-quality beef, pork, or lamb for the hot dog itself. Use a good quality bun, and don't forget the toppings!
  • Get the right equipment: A good hot dog roller or grill is essential for getting that perfect Coney Island char. If you don't have one, you can also use a stovetop grill or even a frying pan.
  • Cook the hot dogs properly: Don't overcook the hot dogs! They should be cooked through, but still juicy. The best way to tell if a hot dog is done is to use a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the center of the hot dog and cook until it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Load up on the toppings: The classic Coney Island hot dog is topped with mustard, onions, and sauerkraut. But you can also get creative with your toppings. Some other popular options include chili, cheese, bacon, and relish.
  • Serve immediately: Hot dogs are best served immediately after they are cooked. This will ensure that they are at their juiciest and most flavorful.

Conclusion:

The Coney Island hot dog is a classic American dish that is enjoyed by people of all ages. With its simple yet delicious combination of flavors, it's no wonder why this hot dog is so popular. If you've never had a Coney Island hot dog, I highly recommend trying one. You won't be disappointed!
