Isa's Cola de Mono image

This is a traditional Chilean Christmastime drink of milk flavored with coffee and spices, passed down to me by our Chilean nanny Isa. It is delicious, and a must-try if you don't care for egg-nog. The recipe can be varied to suit your tastes - be creative with the proportions of coffee, cinnamon, cloves, and vanilla, as well as with your choice of liqueurs.

Time 2h5m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 cups milk
1 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup instant coffee
2 cups aguardiente
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Bring the milk, sugar and cinnamon to a boil.
  • Dissolve the coffee in the hot milk mixture.
  • Put in the fridge to cool.
  • Once cold, add the aguardiente.
  • Pour into capped bottles and return to the fridge.
  • Serve very cold.
  • This keeps in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Tips:

  • Chill the ingredients beforehand: To ensure the best flavor and consistency, make sure to chill the milk, evaporated milk, and condensed milk before mixing them. You can also chill the coffee liqueur and aguardiente for an extra refreshing touch.
  • Use quality ingredients: The better the quality of your ingredients, the better your cola de mono will taste. Opt for fresh milk, creamy evaporated milk, and rich condensed milk. If you can find authentic Chilean coffee liqueur and aguardiente, even better!
  • Adjust the sweetness to your liking: Cola de mono can be as sweet or as mild as you prefer. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, add more condensed milk. For a less sweet version, reduce the amount of condensed milk and add a bit more evaporated milk.
  • Don't overmix: Once you've combined all the ingredients, stir gently until they're well blended. Overmixing can incorporate too much air into the drink, making it foamy and less creamy.
  • Garnish with style: When serving, sprinkle some ground cinnamon or grated nutmeg on top of each glass for an aromatic touch. You can also add a cinnamon stick or a coffee bean for an extra festive look.

Conclusion:

Cola de mono is a delicious and versatile drink that can be enjoyed on its own or as a special treat during the holiday season. With its creamy texture, rich flavor, and warming spices, it's sure to become a favorite among your friends and family. So gather your ingredients, chill them well, and get ready to create a memorable cola de mono experience!
