CLASSIC CRANBERRY SALAD

Classic Cranberry Salad image

My husband's family has been using this traditional and delicious salad for holiday dinners for five generations. The women used to grind the cranberries and the orange in a food grinder, which was a messy job! Thank goodness for food processors! It can be made up to three days before serving, which is always a help when we are cooking for those holiday meals. Keep covered in refrigerator. Cook time is for chilling.

CLASSIC CRANBERRY SAUCE

Classic Cranberry Sauce image

Cranberry sauce will always have a spot on our Thanksgiving table, as a counter to the rich, starchy sides that round out the rest of the menu. Adding welcome tart-sweet flavor with a zing of acid, it's an all-star side that's so simple to throw together. With water, sugar and fresh or frozen cranberries, you can prepare this dish in 30 short minutes. Even better, make it ahead so you can serve it cold, adding yet another welcome contrast to a feast that's largely made up of hot-from-the-oven turkey and casseroles. Master it now and you'll never look at another can of cranberry sauce!

Tips:

  • Use fresh cranberries: Fresh cranberries have a brighter flavor and a firmer texture than frozen cranberries. If you can't find fresh cranberries, you can use frozen cranberries, but be sure to thaw them completely before using.
  • Don't overcook the cranberries: Cranberries should be cooked until they are just tender, but not mushy. Overcooked cranberries will lose their flavor and texture.
  • Use a variety of nuts: This recipe calls for walnuts and pecans, but you can use any type of nuts that you like. Some other good options include almonds, cashews, or pistachios.
  • Add some citrus: The addition of orange zest and lemon juice brightens up the flavor of the salad. You can also add a splash of orange liqueur or Grand Marnier for an extra boost of flavor.
  • Chill the salad before serving: This will help the flavors to meld and the salad will be more refreshing.

Conclusion:

This classic cranberry salad is a delicious and festive dish that is perfect for any holiday gathering. It is easy to make and can be prepared ahead of time, making it a great option for busy hosts. The combination of tart cranberries, sweet pineapple, crunchy nuts, and creamy marshmallows is sure to please everyone at your table.
